While I have always enjoyed movies and music through my entire life, things took a turn for the better when I took an Intro. to Cinema class during my freshman year of college in 2009. At that point, a door to a wide, wild world of film across multiple decades, styles, and countries was opened to me – and it hasn’t closed since.
The genesis of my love for music isn’t as easy to pinpoint – it’s been more of a lifelong process. I blame the oldies music my grandpa forced me to listen to as a child. I am currently working on a Billboard Hot 100 challenge where I listen to every single year-end Hot 100 list published since 1957. I already have a strong backing in rock music, but I feel that this would heighten my awareness by providing a general snapshot of each year.
Most of the critical writing that I do will look at media with a feminist lens. I think it’s very important to look at movies and music according to how they relate to race, gender, sexuality, and other identities. I am also a disabled person, having struggled with epilepsy for over ten years. I am currently working on a project called Cinephiling With Epilepsy, where I provide outlines of popular movies in ways that would help inform fellow disabled folks who may want to watch such films but as concerned about its visual aspects.
These are the main things I will discuss on this blog, but there may be a few surprises along the way. If you need to contact me for any reason, my email is lyzetteg1991 (at) gmail (dot) com. Thanks for reading/following!
