While I have always enjoyed movies and music through my entire life, things took a turn for the better around 2009. At that point, a door to a wide, wild world of film across multiple decades, styles, and countries was opened to me – and it hasn’t closed since.
The genesis of my love for music isn’t as easy to pinpoint – it’s been more of a lifelong process. I blame the oldies music my grandpa forced me to listen to as a child. I am currently working on a Billboard Hot 100 challenge where I listen to every single year-end Hot 100 list published since 1957. I already have a strong backing in rock music, but I feel that this would heighten my awareness by providing a general snapshot of each year.
Much of the critical writing that I do will look at media with a feminist lens. I think it’s very important to look at movies and music according to how they relate to race, gender, sexuality, and other identities. I identify as a bisexual non-binary woman, and I try to insert my views as a person under these umbrellas as often as I can. I also have epilepsy and have a goal to someday build a resource for other neurologically disabled people so we can watch films more cautiously and comfortably.
While most of my film writing these days is in the form of monthly recaps of what I watched the previous month, I am also working on some video reviews of some of the films I watched most recently. I’m still a bit shaky, but if you’re willing to watch/listen to some of my one-take ramblings, they’ll be over at the Lyzette Talks section of the blog.
These are the main things I will discuss on this blog, but there may be a few surprises along the way. If you need to contact me for any reason, my email is lyzetteg1991 (at) gmail (dot) com. I am also active on Letterboxd – wherein I have many of my lists – and semi-active on Twitter. Thanks for reading/following!
